Restoring Your FrontPage Web from our Server to Your PC

Occasionally a customer will experience a problem with their personal PC and lose all of the hard work put into building their website. Do not panic. You can simply publish your last version from our server back to your home PC.  The process is the same as the normal publishing process, only in reverse.

Note:  These instructions apply to FrontPage 98.  For FrontPage 2000, please refer to the Microsoft article FP2000: Publishing from Remote Server to Local Computer.

  1. Open Front Page Explorer.
  2. Click File, Open FrontPage Web, then More Webs
  3. Type your URL (the address you usually publish to) then click OK
  4. Enter your user ID and password, then click OK

This will open the web you have on our server.  Keep in mind that if you change anything while you have it open, it will be visible instantly on the web.  This is the "live" copy everyone sees.

To restore or "publish" to your PC, you must:

  1. Click File, Publish FrontPage Web
  2. Enter your own machine address and web name, then click OK.  (FrontPage should actually automatically display your machine's name in the publishing window.  If it does not, please refer to How to Determine Your Machine Name in Windows 98.)  We do not have instructions for other operating systems and encourage you to look in your vendor documentation.

Note:  FrontPage may warn you that the version on your machine is newer than the one on the server.  To restore the entire web, select Yes to All when prompted.

  1. Once published, please close your web immediately.
