Tour de France

Auvillar

Details of one of our  French vacations. Enjoy the scenery!

Auvillar

Welcome to the small village of Auvillar where our long journey began. We arrived just in time for the Fete de Port where we enjoyed the local food, dancing under the stars with all the villagers and the most beautiful fireworks display I have ever seen. Christophe and our close friends

Bill and Patrick took great pleasure in tasting the local flavors. They were in a "blurred world of their own" after ingesting much too much Armanac and port, and dancing the Marcerena on the floor!

The GuysThe next picture was taken in front of a castle just outside of Auvillar.

The owners were being forced to sell it as their restaurant/disco business was failing. We arrived posing as rich, American Texans hoping to make a purchase.

The castle was occupied by Germans during the Resistance period, thus explaining the bird-like gargoyle perched on the front step.

After a two hour, personalized tour of the 30 rooms, we were informed by the owner's wife that the castle was not for sale after-all. The bank, however, did not seem to agree!

Before leaving this lovely village, I did some tasting of the local flavors myself! No trip to the Sud Ouest is complete without a healthy portion of fois gras. Fois GrasFor you Americans, this is an extremely delicious duck liver pate - but never, NEVER say that to a French person. They take their fois gras VERY seriously and immediately distrust anyone who would mistake it for a simple pate!

If you are interested in more information regarding Auvillar, please visit the Auvillar site. It is a wonderful, romantic village which boasts the official title of "One of the Most Beautiful Villages in France". The locals are extremely friendly and after only a few days we felt very much at home. If you are planning a trip to the South West of France, plan to stay there a few days and get to know the people. You will be glad you did!   On to Arles!
