Parapsychology, "new age" topics and phenomena beyond the limits of conventional science - page 2

Some thoughts on "New Age"..

Reincarnation, out of body experiences, chakras, meditation, channeled information such as the Seth material.. many people would label these things New Age, and indeed, that is the generic category under which you will find books on these topics in a mainstream bookstore. Or maybe you prefer a new age bookstore that you found in your new age directory or on a new age website. The reason I am reluctant to use this label is simple: "New age" has become so stereotypical a qualifier that it devalues the philosophies and practices behind it - which are neither new nor mere fads.

On the contrary, the so called new age is nothing but a rediscovery of some of the most ancient spiritual and philosophical systems of thought in the world, a renaissance of the mind that comes at a time when the destructive nature of materialism is becoming evident to an ever increasing number of people. For indeed the primacy of the mind over matter is the central theme of "new age" thinking. The mind is not an epiphenomenon of the physical brain, as materialist science still insists - it is the primary force of existence, and its power is unlimited - except by the limits we imposes on ourselves. The resources I collected on this site can help you to see the truth in that (admittedly vague) statement, and to free your mind from its self-imposed limitations.

Reincarnation
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, reincarnation is the religious belief in the rebirth of the soul, "in one or more successive existences, which may be human, animal, or, in some instances, vegetable. While belief in reincarnation is most characteristic of Asian religions and philosophies, it also appears in the religious and philosophical thought of primitive religions, in some ancient Middle Eastern religions (e.g., the Greek Orphic mystery, or salvation, religion), Manichaeism, and Gnosticism, as well as in such modern religious movements as theosophy."

What the Britannica article omits, however, is the crucial fact that reincarnation has been empirically shown to be a fact, something that even the late sceptic Carl Sagan had to admit:

"At the time of writing, there are three claims in the ESP field which, in my opinion, deserve serious study: (1) that by thought alone humans can (barely) affect random number generators in computers; (2) that people under mild sensory deprivation can receive thoughts or images 'projected' at them; and (3) that young children sometimes report the details of a previous life, which upon checking turn out to be accurate and which they could not have known about in any other way than reincarnation."   The Demon-Haunted World: Science As a Candle in the Dark (1995)

There are three distinct avenues through which reincarnation can be explored: case studies of young children who remember past lives, hypnotic regression and psychic readings. Only the first two of these methods qualify as scientific, and only the first can in principle prove the reality of reincarnation by scientific standards.

The bulk of the scientific reincarnation research has been conducted by psychiatrist Ian Stevenson, who has done hundreds of case studies of children who remember past lives over three decades.

To the open-minded student of reincarnation, I not only suggest the following resources, but also the Seth Books by Jane Roberts, which contain a wealth of information on the subject.

Jane Roberts & Seth

"The responsibility for your life and your world is indeed yours. It has not been forced upon you by some outside agency. You form your own dreams and you form your own physical reality. The world is what you are. It is the physical materialization of the inner selves which you have formed."

In 1963, author Jane Roberts and her husband were trying a Ouija board, when, to their surprise, they started to receive messages from a being that called itself Seth. Soon, Jane began to hear the words in her head before they formed on the board, and she began to speak for Seth. The messages were that of a highly intelligent, witty personality that seemed very much 'alive' - despite its claim to be "no longer focused in physical reality". Being a rational, down-to-earth person, Jane did not accept Seth at face value. Her initial belief was that Seth was a manifestation of her own mind. But Seth's messages were of such profound philosophical insight, and touching on subjects that Jane had had no previous interest in, or held different opinions about (such as the reality of reincarnation, on which Seth firmly insisted), that she came to accept Seth as a being independent of her own. Jane and her husband held regular Seth sessions, all meticulously transcribed, for 21 years, until Jane died in 1984.

The Seth material is the only work of metaphysical literature in the archives of Yale University, which attests to its quality and significance.

If you have never heard about Seth, and you would like to know more, I recommend The Seth Material. It is an excellent introduction to both the message and the messenger. The best book to read after that is Seth Speaks, which elaborates many of the ideas that are only alluded to in The Seth Material. The following is taken from the original hardcover edition (© 1972 Prentice-Hall:

Now you can join Seth on a voyage inward and through the past; a journey beyond the universe of the five senses into the unseen and unknown. He explains what to expect immediately after death, how to glimpse past lives, ways to contact dead friends and relatives, and exercises to sense the "points" of energy that exist throughout physical matter. Seth shares his troubles as a third century Pope and the first-hand knowledge he has amassed over thousands of years. Church-goers and non-believers alike will be stunned by his reports of Christ, what really happened on Calvary, and the circumstances and date of the Second Coming. He reveals how the Essenes coded the Dead Sea Scrolls ... why the three lost civilizations preceding Atlantis (including one that managed to function entirely underground) rose and fell... how a brotherhood of "Speakers" has worked throughout history to preserve mankind's esoteric knowledge.

This blurb is a bit sensational (as it focuses too much on Reincarnation trivia), but essentially accurate. Seth Speaks is and exciting read, and so packed with information, that it can be read and re-read many times, and one will still discover something new. It is one of those books that grow with you.

Seth on Health

"You must watch the pictures that you paint with your imagination, for you allow your imagination too full a reign. If you read our early material, you will see that your environment and the conditions of your life at any given time are the direct result of your own inner expectations. You form physical materializations of these realities within your own mind.

If you imagine dire circumstances, ill health, or desperate loneliness, these will be automatically materialized, for these thoughts themselves bring about the conditions that will give them reality in physical terms. If you would have good health, then you must imagine this as vividly as in fear you imagine the opposite."

"You should tell yourself frequently, 'I will only react to constructive suggestions,' for this gives you some protection against your own negative thoughts and those of others. A negative thought, if not erased, will almost certainly result in a negative condition: a momentary despondency, a headache, according to the intensity of the thought. Now, if you find yourself with a headache, say immediately, 'That is in the past. Now in this new moment, this new present, I am already beginning to feel better.' Then immediately turn your attention away from the physical condition. Concentrate on something pleasant, or begin another task. In this way, you are no longer suggesting that the body reproduce the headache conditions. The exercise may be repeated."

The Seth Material

You usually glide from wakefulness through to sleep without ever noticing the various conditions of consciousness through which you pass, yet there are several. First, of course, with various degrees of spontaneity, there is the inward turn of consciousness away from physical data, from worries and concerns of the day. Then there is an undifferentiated level between wakefulness and sleep where you act as a receiver - passive but open, in which telepathic and clairvoyant messages come to you quite easily. You consciousnessr can seem to float. (...)

This period can last for only a few moments, for half an hour, or can be returned to. It is a cushioning, supportive, and expansive stage of consciousness. Suggestions given during this time are highly effective. Following this period there is an active state, that can occur, of pseudodreaming, where the mind busies itself with physical concerns that have managed to cling through the first two stages. (...)

Now: These stages of consciousness are all a part of your own reality. A knowledge of them can be most useful. You can learn to "shift gears," stand aside from your own experience, and examine it with much better perspective. You can prepare questions or problems, suggesting that they be solved for you in the sleep state. You can suggest that you will speak with distant friends, or convey important messages that you cannot convey verbally, perhaps. You can bring about reconciliations, for example, at another layer of reality though you cannot do so in this one.

You can direct the healing of your body, telling yourself that this will be accomplished by you at one of the other levels of sleep consciousness, and you may ask for the aid of a Speaker to give you any necessary psychological guidance that is needed to maintain health. If you have particular conscious goals, and if you are reasonably certain that they are beneficial ones, then you can suggest dreams in which they occur, for the dreams themselves will hasten their physical reality.

Seth Speaks, Chapter 17

Out of Body Experiences ("Astral Projections") and Lucid Dreaming
Lucid Dreaming is dreaming while being aware that one is dreaming. Advanced lucid dreamers can shape their dream reality at will, and thus make any fantasy come true in this dream world. Since the dream reality seems to be just as real as the real world, most people find their first lucid dream to be the most exciting experience of their life. Lucid dreaming has obvious hedonistic applications, such as fulfilment of sexual fantasies, or of the fantasy of being able to fly, but it also has important therapeutic value. It can support psychotherapy by providing a stage to reeanct, and come to terms with, certain traumatic events in the past, or to rehearse (and thus consciously shape) future events that are feared. And ultimately, it can aid your spiritual growth by bringing you in closer contact with your subconscious.

The Out-of-Body experience, also known as astral projection, is the separation of the energy body from the physical body while retaining consciousness. In a typical OBE, you wake up during the night, get up and suddenly realize that your physical body is still in the bed. The shock of that realization usually ends the OBE. It seems plausible to assume that many people don't even remember such nightly experiences, or consider them dreams. Advanced OBE students report that they can generate the experience in meditative states at will.

Near Death Experiences and Life after Death

"I looked ahead into the darkness. There was a light up there, and I began to move toward it as quickly as possible. I was moving without legs at a high rate of speed. Ahead the light became brighter and brighter until it overtook the darkness and left me standing in a paradise of brilliant light. This was the brightest light I had ever seen, but in spite of that, it didn't hurt my eyes in the least. Unlike the pain one might feel when walking into sunlight from a dark room, this light was soothing to my eyes.
I looked to my right and could see a silver form appearing like a silhouette through mist. As is approached I began to feel a deep sense of love that encompassed all the of the meaning of the word. It was as though I were seeing a lover, mother, and best friend, multiplied a thousandfold. As the Being of Light came closer, these feelings of love intensified until they became almost too pleasurable to withstand. "
Dannion Brinkley, in Saved by the Light

The existence of the phenomenon of the Near Death Experience (NDE) became widely known through Dr. Raymund A. Moody's bestselling book Life after Life. Studying more than 100 people who had been clinically dead and were reanimated, Moody discovered elements that many of their experiences had in common, such as seeing your own body from the outside, a rapid review of one's life, a dark tunnel with a very bright light at the end, waiting friends and relatives, spiritual guides (often taking the form of religious figures) who gave them a choice to go back, and feelings of warmth and love. This experience became known as the Near Death Experience, or NDE. Many people who have had NDE's are profoundly changed by it. They realize the importance of love in life, and that death is just a transition, not the end of existence.
