(Interior of Captain's Ready Room. Janeway and Tuvok are sitting across from each other. There is a data padd on the table between them.)
TUVOK: ... I would therefore like to adapt holodeck two for use as a phaser range.
JANEWAY: Impossible. We need every recreational facility on this ship available to the crew. They are under unique stresses, and I don't think we can afford to take any resources away which might lower ship's morale.
TUVOK: Respectfully, Captain, security training facilities are also of paramount importance because one factor of our 'unique stress' is that we are in unknown and possibly hostile territory.
JANEWAY: You'll have to do it somewhere else. Perhaps the short-term storage bays will suffice.
TUVOK: They could be adapted to meet that need.
JANEWAY: Get an engineering crew on it. The ... inventive... individuals, who've been constructing that still, in the back of the geophysics laboratory, should rise well to the challenge.
TUVOK: An efficent simultaneous solution to two items on my security report. Very logical.
JANEWAY: Keying the data padd, as though striking an item from a list:: Anything else?
TUVOK: One last item. Mister Garin has requested a change in his duty schedule.
JANEWAY: Oh? He keeps to himself, but I was under the impression that Garin enjoyed the solitude of delta shift. Did he give a reason for this request?
TUVOK: He did. He and Lieutenant Clark are now sharing quarters, and they would like to have the same duty schedules so they may also spend more of their leisure time together.
JANEWAY:::intrigued::: Clark? Brian Clark, from bio-engineering? And *Garin*?
TUVOK: I have observed, Captain, that humans are often attracted to mates with qualities and personality traits quite unlike their own, as with Lt. Clark's ... gregarious, nature, and Garin's more reserved, quiet one. I believe you have a saying that "opposites attract." It is not logical. But it is a common factor in your intimate relationships, and one we would do well to encourage, in my opinion, if we are to accomplish your stated goals of fully integrating the Maquis and Starfleet members of this crew.
JANEWAY:::placing the padd back on the table, and leaning back::: Has anyone ever told you that for a Vulcan you are an incurable romantic, Mr Tuvok?
TUVOK: No. No one has ever told me that.
JANEWAY ::grinning:: Very well. Request granted. But: -- if either of these men's effiency ratings begin to slip as a result of the time they're spending 'integrating', I want to know immediately. We can't afford to let morale get too *high*, either.
(Cut away.)
PREFACE: This scene takes place on the bridge after Harry has disappeared and Chakotay and B'Elanna return to Voyager from the asteroid.
CUT:
1 INT. VOYAGER BRIDGE
Paris is sitting at the navigation console with other crewmembers, including Chakotay, visible behind him. Janeway is in sickbay with B'Elanna. An ensign walks up to Tom's station.
ENSIGN SHILTS: I'm here to relieve you, sir.
PARIS: I'm not leaving this station until I know what's happened to Harry! You can go take a nap, Ensign.
ENSIGN SHILTS: But, sir, Starfleet regulations state that all crew must conform to regular rotation schedules, except in extreme emergencies when there is a shortage of personnel.
PARIS: And what do you call our present situation! (Sighing loudly when the ensign doesn't leave) Lt. Commander Chakotay, request permission to remain at my station.
CHAKOTAY: I doubt if we'll find Harry any faster with you at the comm, Paris. Besides, I thought you had a big date with Ensign Pavlenko.
PARIS: I canceled it. I can't think about romance with Harry missing!
FEMALE ENSIGN: (Turning her head in surprise, sotto voice) Now there's a first! Lt. Paris actually canceling a date! Organ thieves and living nebulas pale in comparison.
CHAKOTAY: Tom, I know you're concerned about Harry, but you need your rest like everybody else.
PARIS: I'm fine. The next few hours are critical and I can handle another rotation without slowing down. Besides, Lt. Commander, I have to do something. I won't be able to relax, much less sleep, until I know he's back on board this ship.
CHAKOTAY: (Looking a bit surprised, but sympathetic) Okay, Lieutenant, permission granted. (To ensign) Ensign Shilts, please report to the Chief Engineer, she'll be needing some extra help about now.
PARIS: Thank you, sir.
Chakotay watches Paris unconsciously tapping his fingers on the console and biting his lip for a moment, then checks some information on his armside readout.
Note: Some recent correspondents have stated that it would be exceedingly difficult to portray anonymous gay and lesbian characters without resorting to stereotypes PRECISELY BECAUSE of the fact that most people cannot in most cases deduce a person's sexual preference based on his or her appearance. While we agree that most gay people look like most straight people, we don't think it would be that difficult to portray, for instance, an anonymous gay male, without dressing him in high heels or leather, as the following vignette demonstrates.
After the captain leaves the table where Kim and Paris are sitting, they continue talking. As they discuss whether or not they should have invited the captain to their table, two male security officers are seen having an earnest conversation at the table behind them. They sit close together and we can see their knees touching under the table. One puts his hand over the other's hand and leans close to say something private. A female crewman with a tray, also in security uniform, walks up behind the couple, smiling at the tableau, and speaks. The two laugh and invite her to join them. She sits and joins the conversation, while the two men continue to hold hands.

I haven't written a scene for Remember, but I wanted to say that
I think it would have been an intriguing twist if
Rokanna's lover had been a woman --thus B'Elanna would have
had dreams of a female lover. Also, Rokhana could have chosen to share her
memories of a male lover with a male crew member (Harry?)
rather than B'Elanna.
