WebBot Doesn't Work After Publishing

Note:  This issue applies to FrontPage 98 only.

Symptoms
WebBot component doesn't work. You only see the name of the WebBot. For example, you see [FrontPage Hit Counter] instead of the FrontPage counter.

Cause
The WebBot component was not "activated". When you publish a page with WebBots, the FrontPage publishing mechanism must recognize them to initialize them on the server. If FrontPage does not detect a WebBot, it will not activate it.

This usually happens when the web was published with FTP and not FrontPage. Since FrontPage did not target the WebBot for activation, the server does not know what to do with it. (tip: if publishing with FTP, you will see "time remaining" in the lower left of your screen instead of "percentage of completion").

Resolution
We strongly recommend the first solution.

  • Republish making sure you are using FrontPage
  • Recalculate hyperlinks on the server (see details here)
